AG Canada: Planting the seeds of diversity for soil health

News article

American soil health guru plants seeds in Alberta

Gabe Brown is a strong advocate for plant diversity and its relationship to soil health. More than two decades ago, Brown knew he had to make changes when the organic matter in his soil had been reduced to less than two per cent. Brown’s system of using a “cocktail” of cover crops along with integrated cropping and grazing has even allowed one Alberta producer to increase his species of forage grasses and legumes nearly ten-fold. Brown’s message to producers? “It’s diversity that drives soil health.”
