Faba Beans in Alberta

An Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) researcher says we’re coming off of a pretty good year for faba beans in Alberta that brought with it some valuable lessons learned. “This year we saw acreage go from 30K to close to 80k,” said Robyne Bowness, pulse research scientist, ARD, Lacombe. “We had more farmers growing faba beans this year, and farmers growing more acres.”

Calf Price Insurance Premiums

Calf Price Insurance is now being offered for 2015 and producers shouldn’t be alarmed by the premium cost. “Cattle Price Insurance for the 2015 calf crop may initially appear to be more expensive than last year, but it is actually a better value,” says Bruce Viney, risk management specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development.

To Spray or Not to Spray

The decision on whether to spray or not can be a difficult one for producers, and it comes with implications and consequences. Nevin Rosaasen, research economist with Alberta Agriculture, dropped by the studio to talk about a tool to help producers determine if they should spray or not – that being a partial budget.
