Root Rot in Peas

The incidence of root rot in peas in Alberta increased significantly from 2013 to 2014. In 2014, 170 fields were surveyed, with rot root showing up in every field. Syama Chatterton, research scientist with Agriculture Canada in Lethbridge, says management starts with preventing the disease in the first place.

Every year it seems different diseases cause issues in the various crops. Mike Harding, research scientist, plant pathology with Alberta Agriculture, says the discovery of verticillium wilt in canola in Manitoba is a big deal.

The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) is pleased to welcome Kevin Auch, a Carmangay-based producer, into the Vice-Chairman position on the AWC Board of Directors. Auch has served on the board since AWC’s inception.

New Variety Recommendations

Every year new crop varieties are approved and become part of farmers’ rotations. Years of breeding and work come to a head early this month, as the various recommending committees gather to evaluate potential new varieties. Erin Armstrong, director of research and product development with Canterra Seeds, looks at the possibility of new varieties coming out of these meetings.

The Working Well program offers province-wide, hands-on workshops for well owners to learn the basics of groundwater, well construction, common well problems, contamination risks, importance of well reclamation and best management practices.

New Nitrogen Use Efficiency Research Video

Alberta Barley has released a new video that highlights nitrogen research at the Field Crop Development Centre in Lacombe. It features Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development research scientist Yadeta Kabeta who discusses his work in nitrogen use efficiency in barley. Nitrogen use efficiency increases nitrogen uptake and use in the plant to help boost crop yields. Kabeta says this is beneficial to farmers for a number of reasons.
