COOL Discussions in Washington

Alberta Agriculture Minister Verlyn Olson was in Washington last week as part of a delegation led by federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz. They were there to reinforce Canada’s position on United States Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) to key industry coalitions and members of the newly elected U.S. House and Senate. Minister Olson says he’s encouraged by what he saw.

Clubroot in Alberta

Almost 400 new cases of clubroot were found in Alberta in 2014. The disease has now been confirmed in 31 counties and municipalities. Dr. Stephen Strelkov, professor at the University of Alberta, says clubroot was first found in canola in Alberta in 2003, and surveys indicate it keeps spreading.

Beef InfoXchange System

In 2014, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association partnered with ViewTrak Technologies, to enhance and expand the Beef InfoXchange System, or BIXS. Hubert Lau, president and CEO of the new company, BIXSco, outlined the focus of this new partnership in an interview here.

How’s Your Farm Business’s Health?

An Excel program available from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) can help producers increase the viability and success of their farm business. ARD’s Agricultural Business Analyser (ABA) Simple Farm Ratio Analyzer gives users a quick idea of the financial health of their farm or ranch as well as a comparison of their business ratios to industry benchmarks.

Inspiring Rural Leadership Pilot Looking for Participants

The Inspiring Rural Leadership pilot project is looking for participants. “At some point in everyone’s life – whether it’s in the workplace, the community, or a family setting – we’re called upon to be a leader,” says Shari Hanson, leadership specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), Red Deer. “The Inspiring Rural Leadership program aims to help develop the leadership skills of those involved in rural organizations.”
