July 14th, RCA will host a webinar to discuss the benefits of this composting program and how to establish on-farm composting operations. You can find more information about the webinar on the Recycling Council of Alberta's website.
The RCA has a guide coming soon for farmers interested in composting urban waste. Farmers probably don't think about the benefits of taking urban compost to enhance agriculture soils. However, this program offers the opportunity to close the circle of food production by efficiently recycling the nutrients from organic waste.
This project allows for a renewable source of fertilizer on your farm that is on-going and under your control. It cuts fertilizer costs and could provide income.
"A benefit of the program is farmers can receive additional income by charging to accept the waste," says Claudia Boeckling, Recycling Council of Alberta Administration Manager.
Lastly, the project aims to connect urban & rural communities, with the added benefit of reducing greenhouse gas emissions created by organic waste.
