Open Farm Days @ Farming Smarter
[caption id="attachment_10250" align="alignleft" width="600"] Volunteer Lethbridge, Environment Lethbridge, Oldman Watershed Council, Farm Stewardship Centre, Earthly Matters, Alberta Wheat Commission and Alberta Canola Producers Commission joined us and contributed a wealth of information and a barrel of fun.[/caption]
An amazing transformation took place in our research fields Aug. 20 as we welcomed non profit friends and commissions to entertain the public for an afternoon. Michaels prepared the children by painting faces as they arrived then sending them off to explore. Adults, meanwhile, received the photo scavenger hunt challenge card and took a guess at a couple things hoping to win Movie Mill passes.
[caption id="attachment_10244" align="alignleft" width="350"] Dan Rollingson of Earthly Matters tells Farming Smarter's Assistant Manager Jamie Puchinger & Office Manager Shelly Barclay about how worms create a perfect soil enhancer for large and small operations.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_10239" align="alignright" width="300"] Dr. Hector Carcamo Research Scientist - Insect Pest Management with Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada brought a selection of bugs that fascinated young and old.[/caption]
Once they headed off down the field, there was tons to see, learn and experience for all ages. When they made it all the way down the Walk of Learning, there was a BBQ with fresh Molnar Farms Taber corn, burgers, PepsiCo chips and pop. Once they were tuckered out, they hopped on the wagon to take them back to the parking lot with a bag of goodies and a pile of memories to go.

Farming Smarter Open Farm Days offers a place to make memories for the whole family.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_10246" align="alignleft" width="350"] Both adults and children enjoyed getting up close with the farm equipment. We had a selection of old, new, big and plot size for people to explore.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_10240" align="alignleft" width="360"] Talented face painters from Michaels recreated the Farming Smarter logo on this young guys face. The field had butterflies, foxes and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles running amok all afternoon.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_10243" align="alignright" width="192"] Alberta 4H Southern Region focused on horse husbandry and this little tyke loved the chance to gallop in the field.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_10248" align="alignleft" width="361"] Lethbridge MP Rachel Harder served up Molnar Farms corn to BBQ goers along with a big smile and classic western hospitality.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_10241" align="alignright" width="300"] Food tastes better outside, in the shade with a free fancy water bottle donated by SouthWest Design & Construction and Meridian.[/caption]
Everyone had a fantastic day and we thank the people and organizations that helped to make it so. Join us next year, Saturday, Aug. 18 for what we're sure will be an experience for everyone.
[caption id="attachment_10245" align="alignright" width="300"] What's an Al Fresco BBQ without some catching up with people you don't see every day? Farming Smarter General Manager Ken Coles & Lethbridge MP Rachel Harder provided a cheerful welcome to people seeking corn at the BBQ.[/caption]
