2018, Farming Smarter Plot Hop
The hot sun was just a footnote on a day focused on spreading knowledge to those who want it. Farming Smarter hosted approximately 70 people through various fields throughout Lethbridge County.
The day began with headliner Syama Chatterton, who spoke at length about her disease nursery and the early signs of pulse disease. Reem Aboukhaddour was to follow with Rob Graf on her heels. They spoke of wheat wellness, varieties and management strategies respectively. Willemijn Appels stole the show for a while with her session on subsurface drip irrigation.
And Jarrett Chambers closed the day, trying to 'smarten us up' rather than dumb down the confusing concept of biostimulants.
We also heard from our very own Adam Stanford, who created a DIY soil sensor complete with a demonstration and building tips.
Each session was filled with inquisitive questions and laughter. Beyond education, fun seemed to be the secondary theme of the Plot Hop. Taking an ice cream break in the afternoon, our guests played a round of merger madness. It divided the group into teams and had them try to list all of names different agriculture companies that have become part of a larger company over the years.
The Plot Hop was as fun as it was informative. And though we were all desperately seeking shade by the end of it, we had a blast!
