The second intake for Women in STEM scholarships are open until Dec. 31, 2021.
Alberta's government is awarding a total of $125,000 to women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Each successful applicant will receive $2,500 to support their studies. 50 applicants will be able to take home a scholarship.
"During the first intake, Alberta's government was able to support 50 young women pursuing studies in STEM. We are committed to supporting women and girls to succeed in whatever career path they choose, including STEM," said Associate Minister of Status of Women, Whitney Issik.
"This commitment is even more important now, as emerging technology and innovation play a significant part of Alberta's economic recovery and diversification. We want to inspire women and girls to write the next great chapter, code or formula in Alberta's story," Issik continued.
Those eligible for the scholarship are women studying in STEM, and Canadian citizens (Permanent Residents/Protected Persons). Visa students are not eligible. Additionally, they are residents of Alberta who is a registered student (full or part-time) at an approved Alberta post-secondary institution. There is no age limit to apply.
The first intake, which closed Feb 21, 2021, received 106 eligible applications. The majority of applicants attended MacEwan University, Mount Royal University, the University of Alberta, and the University of Calgary.
"When we empower women and girls to enter STEM professions, we are investing in our future and tapping into a highly skilled workforce. As part of Alberta's Recovery Plan, I'm proud that we're investing in women and girls to pursue, impact and succeed in the fields of science, engineering, technology and math," said Alberta Minister of Advanced Education, Demetrios Nicolaides.
