Project Abstract
Kochia is one of the most-troublesome weeds on the Canadian Prairies. Its ability to thrive under conditions of abiotic stress like drought, heat, and salinity give it an edge over crops. A rapid increase in herbicide resistance among kochia populations (groups 2, 4, 9, 14) has made it very difficult to control kochia using herbicide alone.
Integrated weed management (IWM) approaches can be effective for managing kochia. However, kochia tends to establish in marginal areas of fields where common IWM approaches are not effective.
Alberta farmers need to know how they can manage kochia in these saline and low-lying areas to prevent the establishment and spread of kochia throughout their fields. This project will work directly with commercial farmers to determine how to control kochia on saline and marginal lands using modern IWM strategies.
Controlling kochia patches on marginal land without relying solely on herbicides is critical for controlling the spread of herbicide-resistant kochia.
